Book Review: Baby’s Very First Black and White Library

Stella Baggot’s Baby’s Very First Black and White Library is a perfect collection of 4 tiny books, ideal for newborns and babies.

Summary: 4 board books, approximately 10cm square. Each page has a simple black and white image with a tiny bit of colour, and a single word. The 4 titles are “babies”, “faces”, “going out” and “animals”. Developmentally stimulating for young babies, they help to grow a love of books, an understanding of turning pages, and can actually provide a soothing familiarity to a cranky baby.

Best thing: They fit in a back pocket, a buggy, a car door pocket and a variety of other places where you might find yourself in sudden need of distracting or entertaining a baby. Also the joy of seeing a tiny baby really look at and enjoy a book.

Time to read: For an adult, less than a minute. There’s no storyline here. For a baby, they’ll stare at each page for a minute or two.

Pages: little board books

Age range: 0-12 months. You’ll find that as a baby grows, these are some of the first pages they actually turn for themselves. Even once your child is 1-2, they still delight in reading these books as they can do it all by themselves.

Buy or borrow: buy. We’ve lost count of the number of these we’ve bought for friends with new babies.
