If you’re looking for a way to introduce some “kiwiana” into your little one’s life, this book by Donovan Bixley is a great option.
Summary: A page or two per letter, each page is covered in iconic kiwi images. There’s no story, it’s an alphabet picture book. There is (as with most of Bixley’s work) unmistakable humour throughout. See the images on Amazon for more detail, they’re impressive!
Best thing: The illustrations entirely distract the reader from realising they are actually learning to read.
Time to read: It really depends how long you spend poring over the pictures, but can take a few minutes or up to 20-30 minutes.
Pages: There are several options including paperback and board book, so you can choose the most appropriate for your little reader.
Age: 1-5. Initially this works well for teaching words (and a good range of Kiwi words) to the younger child. As they progress, they’ll come back to it to start to learn the alphabet, then later to learn to read words. It lasts well!
Borrow or buy: We’d say buy. It will last for several years and is more interesting than most of the alphabet books we’ve found.
